Aging in Place

What is Aging in Place?

Aging in Place is living in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level. Long time home owners overwhelmingly prefer to stay in their community and in their familiar environment. To safely Age in Place we need to make home modifications. We need to improve safety, increase accessibility, improve mobility, and prevent falls.

According to the Center for Disease Control the best place to age is in the home that you live in independently and comfortably. You are able to stay in your own home by modifying your environment.

I contacted Elderspaces soon after my husband suffered a stroke and while he was still in the hospital. I was looking for assistance with how to modify the house both for him and for the two of us as we age. Elderspaces was thorough in gathering information about us and examining the house. The recommendations were right on point. Upon returning home, my husband felt safe moving about the house and was immediately able to move about independently. I would not have been able to accomplish this without Elderspaces' recommendations.

Fall prevention to safely age in place

The importance of Fall Prevention

Falls are a serious concern to everyone’s health, but especially as we age.  Falls are not a normal part of aging and Elderspaces is here to modify your environment to prevent them from happening. • Find a good balance and exercise program to build balance and strength.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider and Occupational Therapist and ask for a risk assessment for falls.
  • Review your medications regularly with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Get your vision and hearing checked. Your eyes and ears are keeping you on your feet!
  • Keep your home safe by working with an Occupational Therapist. Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, and install handrails along the stairway.
